The Art of Helen Hiller Hills
Like all kids I enjoyed drawing and I was fortunate to have sisters and parents who encouraged and critiqued. In college I majored in History and Spanish, with a minor in education, no art at all. I taught Spanish for a few years in Groton, CT, then took a break, raised my kids, and volunteered a lot, especially in school libraries. I later became an elementary school librarian, which I loved. Until my husband Norm and I retired to Marion, I didn’t make time for drawing. I’d never painted until I took pastel and oil painting classes in 2013 at Art on Center in Fairhaven. Marion Art Center has tried unsuccessfully to teach me watercolor. Other than that it’s been critiques and help from friends and YouTube videos, and lots of practice. Artists talk about their passion but for me it’s more of an itch that has to be scratched. Often what I have in my head before I begin changes as I work, and I continue with the new vision. Sometimes it works out and makes me happy. Sometimes I try again.
