Join us for a presentation on how and why Dartmouth’s 1762 Elihu Akin House, “The Little House with a Big Story to Tell,” was saved from demolition, including a history of this modest but important home and how the community was brought to rally behind the effort to save it.
Saving a Historic House Presentation
Who: Diane Gilbert, President and Treasurer of the Dartmouth Heritage Preservation Trust and current member of the Dartmouth Historical Commission. In November 2018, Preservation Massachusetts awarded Diane the K. Julie McCarthy Community Spirit Award for her work.
What: Presentation on how and why Dartmouth’s 1762 Elihu Akin House, “The Little House with a Big Story to Tell,” was saved from demolition, including a history of this modest but important home and how the community was brought to rally behind the effort to save it.
There is no charge for this event (although donations to the Sippican Historical Society will be welcome!) Light refreshments will be served.
When: 7pm to 8pm, Tuesday, March 26th, 2019
Where: The Music Hall, 164 Front Street, Marion, MA
Why: We have all come to Marion in large part because of the character of its natural and architectural features, yet they are perpetually at risk. It is an obligation to ourselves and our future to preserve what brought us to Marion in the first place. To quote Diane Gilbert, “Every time an important historic house or structure is lost or demolished, we lose another connection to our history, the people who settled our coastal areas over the centuries and their culture. We have already lost too many architecturally significant buildings and structures, and as a result, the special character shaped by our history has been diminished.” And to put it pragmatically, preservation is a tool for stabilization of property values, economic development and sustainability.
