This Speaker Series lecture will be co-sponsored by the Marion Garden Group, and presented in tandem with the Annual Meeting of the Sippican Historical Society. The Annual Meeting will begin at 6:15 pm, and the Speaker Series lecture will begin at 7:00 pm.
A diploma in garden design led Marion to a curiosity about Garden History. This led to a Masters in Garden History at the University of Bristol at the same time as working at the renowned nursery Special Plants with Derry Watkins. Since then Marion has worked as a freelance garden historian and designer in both the UK and USA. She has previously taught at the University of Bristol and the University of Buckingham for their Masters in Garden History courses.
Her design work focuses on planting, taking inspiration from various historical styles, a subject she also lectures on at The London College of Garden Design. She has been a hands-on gardener for many clients including managing a large private estate with formal gardens.
As part of the series The Historic Gardens of England, she co-authored two books about the counties of Cheshire and Somerset. She has written books on the history of the late Duke of Westminster’s gardens at Eaton Hall and University of Bristol’s gardens, and is currently researching the gardens of two large private estates, creating legacy garden books for their owners.
Marion has led a variety of bespoke garden tours in the UK and Europe and is currently designing new tours to include many private gardens as travel opens up again. She is a volunteer and trustee for the Painswick Rococo Garden in Gloucestershire and 2021 saw her debut on PBS America’s “A Short History of the English Garden” (often repeated). Marion is a sought-after speaker and tour leader, known for her “infectious enthusiasm.”
While sharing her passion for all things garden-related, she hopes participants will reignite theirs. Marion will give a lavishly illustrated lecture on “Women and Gardens” about some of the great characters to have created gardens through history, and their legacy today.
