SUMMARY:Madelyn Shaw - Fleeced
DESCRIPTION:Not all about wool is warm and fuzzy. . . Fleeced is a new book that explores the way that heightened demand for wool in wartime existed historically in an international vortex of negotiation\, intrigue\, and anxiety – and its unexpected effects on how we dress today. Join us to learn more about this fascinating topic when co-author Madelyn Shaw will present a talk and sign copies of the book\, which will be available for sale after the talk. \n\nCo-authors Trish FitzSimons and Madelyn Shaw bring Australian and US perspectives\, respectively\, to the 19th century rise of industrial production of woolen fabrics and Southern hemisphere sheep culture\, which supported the enormous increase in the size of armies in the 20th century. Fleeced illuminates the fascinating and previously untold history of how shortages of wool in wartime shaped our current reliance on synthetic fibers—source of widespread microplastic pollution—and the mountains of discarded fast fashion they have enabled.\n\n\nMadelyn Shaw is an independent curator and award-winning author specializing in the exploration of American culture and history\, and its international connections\, through textiles and dress. Her curatorial experience and publications span decades at the National Museum of American History\, Smithsonian Institution\, the Museum of Art\, Rhode Island School of Design; New Bedford Whaling Museum; The Textile Museum\, Washington DC; and the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology\, NYC. \nHer co-author Trish FitzSimons (who is unavailable for this event) is a documentary filmmaker and exhibition curator with a passion for social and cultural history. She was a professor\, and is currently adjunct professor\, at the Griffith Film School\, Griffith University\, Brisbane\, Australia. Documents and letters associated with her wool-buyer grandfather’s 1905-07 sojourn in England and the US as he learned the wool trade were a key impetus to and resource for this project.

SUMMARY:Lauren Wolk - Writing without a Map
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning author Lauren Wolk returns to Marion!\nSome writers create a map before they begin a story. They know exactly where they’re going and how to get there. Others are “pantsers” who write by the seat of their pants\, without a map or even a destination. Lauren Wolk is a confirmed pantser who has learned that although writing into the unknown can lead to “wrong” turns\, dead ends\, and a certain amount of anxiety\, it also promises adventure\, awakens instincts\, ignites courage\, piques curiosity\, sparks imagination\, and invokes memories as she makes the journey hand in hand with her characters. Wolk will talk about this writing process and how it has shaped her novels\, poems\, and the short films she has been making for the past year. This is an all-ages event that will include ample opportunity for questions. \nThanks to SHS members\, this event is free and open to the public. Donations always appreciated. \nRSVPs appreciated to info@sippicanhistoricalsociety.org

SUMMARY:Tenacious Women: Profiles in preservation in New England
DESCRIPTION:At the forefront of New England’s preservation movement were women bringing a passion for preservation to the communities where they lived. Yet\, somehow\, these tenacious women’s history is often overlooked or lost from the record. This lecture will trace women’s participation in preservation through the late 19th and early 20th centuries and elevate their contributions in preserving New England’s history. \nElizabeth Paliga brings us these stories. She is a Preservation Services Manager at Historic New England\, bringing a background in architectural conservation and history. \nThis Speaker Series event is free and open to the public\, thanks to the Sippican Historical Society members. Donations are always appreciated.

SUMMARY:The Drawings of H. H. Richardson
DESCRIPTION:H. H. Richardson (1838-1886) was a prolific architect whose shingle-style cottage approach is visible in many late 19th-century houses in Marion. For the first time\, we can explore his impact on American architecture in Henry Hobson Richardson: Drawings from the Collection of Houghton Library\, Harvard University (Monacelli Press / Phaidon 2024)\, by Jay Wickersham\, Chris Milford\, and Hope Mayo. The authors will discuss the Richardson drawings\, and what they reveal about collaboration in his studio. \nThe book presents full-color reproductions of 450 sketches and renderings by the architect and his studio assistants. The book includes more than 50 projects\, including such masterpieces as Boston’s Trinity Church; the Marshall Field Store and Glessner House in Chicago; five buildings for the Ames family in North Easton\, MA; and a series of masterful Shingle Style houses\, including the Percy Browne house in Marion. \nJay Wickersham is an architect\, lawyer\, and architectural historian and a former professor in practice at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Chris Milford is a partner in the architectural firm of Milford & Ford Associates\, specializing in historic preservation and restoration. Hope Mayo is the former Philip Hofer Curator of Printing and Graphic Arts at Houghton Library.

SUMMARY:The Story of Sarah Kidd - Daphne Palmer Geanacopoulos
DESCRIPTION:Before he was executed in 1701\, Captain William Kidd was one of the most notorious pirates to prowl the seas. But few know that he had an accomplice back home: his wife\, Sarah\, a woman whose life is a lesson in survival\, resilience\, and resourcefulness. SHS is pleased to present historian and journalist Dr. Daphne Palmer Geanacopoulos\, who tells Sarah Kidd’s story. \nIn her book\, The Pirate’s Wife\, Dr. Geanacopoulos takes a fresh and feminist perspective  on a historical period that’s often written around men. Utilizing a trove of original documents\, Dr. Geanacopoulos reconstructs Sarah’s life (1670-1744) in New York – when the colony was a pirate haven – her roles as wife\, mother\, merchant\, and socialite\, and delves into the swashbucklingly nasty politics of the time. She was key to Kidd’s fight for his life against the people who accused him of turning from privateer to pirate\, and was even initially arrested and jailed with him.  Sarah went from socialite to fugitive and international outlaw\, and back again\, always managing to find her own agency within the oppressive structures of colonial America. \nDr. Daphne Palmer Geanacopoulos is a historian\, journalist\, and author of The Pirate Next Door: The Untold Story of Eighteenth-Century Pirates’ Wives\, Families and Communities. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times\, the Washington Post\, Southern Living. \nYour kind RSVP  is appreciated.
