The Stone Estate at Great Hill

Learn about the Stone Estate at Great Hill, a rambling stone baronial hall built by Mr. Galen L. Stone (a Boston investment banker) and seated on 312 acres of rolling woods, meadows and lawns off Delano Road. Great Hill itself is a peninsula that juts out into Buzzards Bay. Its prominent feature is a distinctive glacial hill that reaches 127 feet above sea level and gives the estate its name. Great Hill constitutes the highest land in Marion and has approximately two-and-one-half miles of waterfront. Long before the first permanent English settlement in Marion in 1679, Native Americans relied on its elevation as a strategic lookout to protect their families and crops, and utilized it as their sacred tribal meeting ground.
