What a fabulous turn out for our February 1, 2023 Speaker Series event. It was a full house in person at the Music Hall, with more than 30 people attending virtually from all over the United States. Rick DaSilva, a member of the SHS Board of Directors, presented Claire Dempsey’s research on Marion’s Portuguese, Azorean and Cape Verdean Community along with stories from his childhood and memories from others.
We kicked off the evening with an introduction by Meg Steinberg, Chair of the Marion Historical Commission. She gave background on the Study, which was funded by a Marion Community Preservation Act grant. She also shared some of the Commission’s other initiatives, such as the newly established Historic District Study Committee.
If you missed it, or if you’d like to see it again, here it is! Thanks to ORC-TV for using the wonderful audio visual system at the Music Hall to capture this Speaker Series evening. We’re looking forward to gathering more stories and objects from the Point Road School and the 20th Century Cape Verdean community in Marion. Contact us if you’d like to join us on this venture.
